Du’e, also known as Arhat Du’e or National Preceptor Du’e, is a character created by the author “Selling Newspaper Boy” in the novel Da Feng Da Geng Ren.
Du’e is a gaunt, old Buddhist monk, one of the Arhats of Buddhism, possessing the strength of a second-grade Arhat. He is a devout believer in Mahayana Buddhism and a staunch supporter of eliminating evil forces. He came to Da Feng because of the Shenshu incident. After discussing Buddhist doctrine with Xu Qian’an, he converted to Mahayana Buddhism and revered Xu Qian’an as the “Buddha Child” and “Supreme Buddha.” Subsequently, he led the followers of Mahayana Buddhism out of the Western Regions and joined Da Feng, making Mahayana Buddhism the state religion of Da Feng. Du’e was appointed as the National Preceptor of Da Feng, helping to spread Buddhism widely.
Character Appearance
Du’e is a gaunt, old Buddhist monk with dark skin and a face full of wrinkles. His thin frame is wrapped in a loose monk’s robe, giving him a slightly comical appearance.
Character Experiences
Du’e came to Da Feng to investigate Shenshu’s severed limbs and attempt to break the seal. After discussing Buddhist doctrine with Xu Qian’an in the Da Feng capital, he enthusiastically embraced Mahayana Buddhism and acknowledged Xu Qian’an as the “Buddha Child” and “Supreme Buddha.” Afterward, he led the believers of Mahayana Buddhism away from the Western Regions and joined Da Feng, making Mahayana Buddhism the state religion of Da Feng. Du’e was appointed as the National Preceptor, dedicating himself to the flourishing of Buddhism.
