Wang Qinian is a character in the costume drama “Joy of Life” (Seasons 1 and 2), played by actor Tian Yu.

Wang Qinian appears a bit silly on the surface, but is actually very clever. He loves making money and is particularly fond of his daughter. Wang Qinian is very loyal to Fan Xian, always following closely behind him and accompanying him through the various changes in the imperial court. Throughout the series, Wang Qinian stays by Fan Xian’s side, witnessing all his important events.

Character Profile

Wang Qinian is someone who seems comical and greedy, but he is actually very smart and loyal. He has a funny personality, with both humorous and endearing aspects. Although sometimes a little cunning and greedy, Wang Qinian has his own bottom line and principles. He is always happy to help Fan Xian, and eventually becomes Fan Xian’s loyal and dutiful servant (or partner).

Character Experience

Season 1

When Fan Xian first arrived in Kyoto, Wang Qinian initially flattered Fan Xian with praise and compliments, then gave him a map of Kyoto’s scenic spots. However, when opened, the map was very crude, reflecting Wang Qinian’s perfunctory and half-hearted attitude.

Wang Qinian is very afraid of his wife, and is always scolded and even beaten by her for coming home late. To support his family, he constantly does side jobs. When Fan Xian first arrived in Kyoto, he sold Fan Xian a map, in addition to dealing in books, and accepting bribes, fitting the description of “taking people’s money and helping them get rid of trouble.” Even if Fan Xian asks for something, Wang Qinian will openly charge a fee.

While Teng Zijing was still alive, Wang Qinian closely followed Fan Xian, helping him in many situations. Later, he was dismissed from the Supervisory Council for helping Fan Xian steal important documents. After that, Fan Xian sent Wang Qinian to hunt down Consort Si Lili of Northern Qi. Wang Qinian asked for a high reward: 50 taels of silver per month, plus two acres of land, a cow, and ten pigs. Eventually, he and Fan Xian went together to hunt down Si Lili.

Season 2

When Fan Xian faked his death and returned to Kyoto, Wang Qinian and Fan Xian investigated the disappearance of Teng Zijing’s wife and children. After Fan Xian woke up, he continued to accompany the envoy back to Kyoto and investigated the Baoyuelou case.

On the day after Fan Xian’s wedding, Lin Wan’er told Wang Qinian that he and Fan Xian were not just superiors and subordinates, but also friends, partners, and family. This touched Wang Qinian deeply. After Fan Xian recovered from the Huan Kong Temple assassination attempt, he received instructions to go to Nanjiang to take over the three major blocks, and Wang Qinian continued to accompany him.

Throughout the series, Wang Qinian is Fan Xian’s loyal partner, following him closely and providing help when needed.
